What is a tasting?

A tasting is your chance to sample a variety of foods from our catering menu. While brides are not required to attend, many couples bring along family members or friends whose opinions they trust to help finalize a menu. Unlike restaurants, caterers typically don’t host one-on-one tastings for every client. For example, our signature Steamship Round of Beef weighs about 80 pounds, so you may have tried it at a bridal show, but it’s not practical for an individual tasting. The same goes for carved turkey breast. Instead, we host larger tastings a few times per year where you can try many of our most popular items in one place.
 

Here’s how tastings work at Tommy’s Catering:

Portions are small so you can try a wide variety of foods. We usually feature seven chicken entrées, a pasta action station with seven homemade sauces and two types of pasta, carving stations for beef, turkey, and brisket (upon request), a dozen barbecue selections, three pie flavors, and several appetizers.

Because we’re a catering company and not a restaurant, we only host a few tastings each year. We keep an older PDF menu on our website so you can see examples of what’s typically offered, but we only announce new tastings directly to couples who contact us or leave their information at a bridal show.

If you don’t have time to attend a tasting before your wedding, we save samples from previous tastings, such as chicken entrées and sauces. While we can’t always match every menu item to upcoming events, we often have frozen samples available for you to try. For peace of mind, none of our food is recycled—anything left over goes to Vandergrift Meals on Wheels and local families with special needs children.

Our tastings are held at Oklahoma Schoolhouse Hall in Apollo, a beautiful and affordable venue near our shop. Each bride may bring up to six guests, allowing you to include people whose opinions you value. In addition to food, you’ll also see displays of related services such as linen and china upgrades, night cap bars, and RAMP-certified bartenders. You’ll also meet many members of our crew.

RSVP is required so we can prepare enough food for each seating. Occasionally, we even bring out our unique VW grill to serve marinated chicken, portabella mushrooms, pineapple, and more. If you’d like to be notified about our next tasting, please contact us.
